Languages at Goldington Green Academy
The chosen additional language that children learn is French, although we celebrate the wide range of languages that our staff, parents and children speak through our enrichment and other learning activities.
In Early Years our children become familiar with the French language through the repetition and singing of traditional (and not so traditional!) French songs and rhymes. Our children learn to count to ten in French and become confident in saying ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye. ‘
AT GGA we feel it is important to begin language learning in the Early Years, although this is not nationally statutory learning until Key Stage 2 (Year 3 to 6). We are proud to say that our children thoroughly enjoy their language learning at our school and it is not uncommon to be greeted with a ‘Bonjour!’ in the morning by one of our pupils!
In Key Stage One (Year One and Two) our children continue their French language learning and more complex songs and rhymes our taught. Children also learn additional songs and raps that will set them in good stead for the more formal French language sessions that are delivered in Year 3 to 6.
In Key Stage Two our children learn basic French vocabulary through games, French texts and practical learning opportunities such as role play. Our French learning follows the Languages National Curriculum and provides our children with differentiated learning activities, so all of our children can reach their full potential in their language learning.
We also take our Year 3 and 4 children on a 5 day residential visit to Paris in which children experience the sights of Paris, buy produce from a French market, experience a traditional French Bistro, spend a day in Disneyland Paris and many other activities during their stay.
